Introduction
The classification proposal editor is used to create a proposal for a new classification number or a new reference or tracing to an existing classification number. It is also used to propose cancelling an existing classification number and to modify or delete one of your proposals prior to it being scheduled for a weekly editorial meeting by LC staff.

When you are finished working on a proposal you must use either the Save, Delete, Cancel or Logout buttons to properly release the record. If you inadvertently close the proposal editing window without using one of the buttons provided, you will loose any changes you made to the record and, you may leave the record locked. If you cannot get back into a record because it is locked, try logging out and back in again.

After you have clicked on the Save, Delete, Cancel or Logout buttons, the screen that is returned will give you the option to close the window.


Classification Proposal
Everything from Proposed class # to Cf. note (class #) will become part of the final classification record if this proposal is approved. All of the remaining fields are only used by the editorial staff in making their decision. Use the Cataloger's comments field to explain why this change is being requested.

The classification proposal form gives you the ability to maintain multiple tracings and references. The See ref., For ... see ... and Cf. note fields take a classification number and a caption or topic. The class numbers (which can be spans) correspond to the place where each tracing or reference should appear in the schedules (or tables, in the case of a tables record). The Proposed class #, at the top of this form, is the number to which these references refer.

The tracing/reference fields are repeatable. To repeat or delete one fo these fields, click on the radio button in front of the field and then click on one of the following buttons at the bottom of the form:

Append FieldAppends a blank copy of the currently selected tracing or reference.
Insert FieldInserts a blank copy of the currently selected tracing or reference.
Remove FieldRemoves the currently selected tracing or reference.

When you are finished with the form, click on the Save button to save your changes or the Cancel or Logout buttons to leave this page without saving your changes.


Reference Proposal
This form is used to add or modify a request for a new reference or tracing from one classification number to another. Use the radio buttons on the left of the tracing/reference fields to select the type of tracing or reference you are proposing and complete the two input fields on that line. Note that you can only fill in one of these lines and it must be the same line that has the checked radio button.

The Location of reference value describes where this reference will appear in the schedules and the Target # field contains the class number or span to which this reference refers. The remaining fields are used by the editorial staff when processing this proposal and will not be stored in the final classification record. Use the Cataloger's comments field to explain why this change is being requested.

When you are finished with the form, click on the Save button to save your changes or the Cancel or Logout buttons to leave this page without saving your changes.
